Annakut, also known as Govardhan Puja, is a vibrant harvest festival celebrated with great enthusiasm in India, particularly among the Hindu community. This festival commemorates Lord Krishna's victory over Lord Indra by lifting the Govardhan Hill to protect the villagers from torrential rains. In Kolkata, Annakut is celebrated with unique traditions and rituals, making it a truly special occasion.

The festival typically falls on the day after Diwali and is celebrated with great fervor in various parts of Kolkata. Devotees prepare a mountain of food, known as Annakut, which is offered to Lord Krishna as a mark of gratitude for the bountiful harvest. The Annakut consists of a wide variety of vegetarian dishes, including sweets, savories, and various grains. The sheer variety and quantity of food on display is truly awe-inspiring.

One of the most distinctive features of Annakut in Kolkata is the ritual of throwing boiled rice to the poor. This practice, known as "Annadan," is considered a sacred act of charity and is believed to bring blessings and prosperity to the giver. Wealthy families in Kolkata often participate in this ritual by showering boiled rice from their balconies onto the streets below. Devotees eagerly gather below, spreading out cloth sheets to catch the falling rice. This creates a festive atmosphere, with people of all ages and backgrounds coming together to participate in this joyous occasion.

The Annadan ritual is not only a religious practice but also a social event that fosters a sense of community and equality. It brings together people from different socioeconomic backgrounds, reminding them of their shared humanity and the importance of giving back to society. The act of sharing food is seen as a way of expressing gratitude for one's blessings and helping those who are less fortunate.
