An small Interview with Maria Amiragova
Who and from where are you?
My name is Maria Amiragova. I was born in Tbilisi, Georgia, and after high school, I was accepted to an Academy of Fine Arts in my hometown. After the three years of studying, I transferred to Surikov’s University of Fine Arts in Moscow, Russia, where I received my master’s degree in Graphic Arts (book illustration). After graduation, I worked in different publishing houses where I illustrated children’s books. Twenty years ago, I moved to the US where I worked as a graphic designer and an art teacher. Nowadays I am a freelance artist.
How you got into this?
As long as I can remember myself, I wanted to be an artist, always drawing, sketching, or painting. I loved it so much that I never thought about another profession. Art is my passion to this moment and I cannot image myself living without it.
What is your driving force?
I am trying to work every day no matter what. This is the key. The more you work, the more you learn, the more invaluable experience you gain. People usually ask me where do I get my inspiration from, and I often tell them that it could be from anything at all: nature in all its majesty, interesting people, beautiful photographs, or simply random thoughts that pop into my head, seemingly from nowhere at all. In other words, all you have to do is look around and listen to your inner voice…
What kind of work you do and why?
The most favorite way to me to express myself is through intuitive painting. I allow my imagination soar and be unpredictable. When you are creating your own world, the magic could happen. In my opinion, art does not have to be perfectly completed. Sometimes I leave it almost unfinished and I let the viewer fill the last piece, whatever it might be.
I love many different mediums. For many years, I have been working with gouaches, tempera, watercolors, acrylics, and printmaking materials. Now I mostly work with oils, mixed media and colored pencils. I also do digital arts, collages, and I use a lot of texture in some of my artworks.
