An Interview with Kim Smith.

Who and from where are you?

I am Kim Smith (or Kim Myers Smith since I couldn’t get the url for Kim Smith, go figure!) and I have lived my entire life in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, except for the four years of college in Kutztown, PA.

How you got into this?

I have loved art and creating for as long as I can remember. One of my fondest memories from elementary school was hearing the art cart coming down the hallway. I went to college for graphic design and have an advertising and design business as my “real” job. Even though design is a creative job, and can be fun at times, I always really wanted to be an artist. Between running a business and raising three great kids, I realized that it would be many more years before I would have the time to follow my passion and paint. So a few years ago I made a commitment to myself to get up at 5 am every morning to create space in my life to do what I love. Even though there are days that I would much rather sleep in until 7, it has become something I can’t imagine living without. It truly is my peaceful space in the chaos of a crazy busy life. It’s one hour of my day that is all mine.

What is your driving force?

I think my driving force is that painting makes me infinitely happy. I love the feeling of losing all sense of time, getting totally lost in the process, and being surprised to see what happens before my eyes.

What kind of work you do and why?

I create primarily small paintings, many of them 6” square mostly because I can finish one before the sun comes up. On occasion when I have a Sunday afternoon to myself I do paint large and really love the freedom of it. Currently I paint birds and flowers and donuts, whatever inspires me, but to be honest, I see things I would love to paint everywhere I go, landscapes, portraits, but there’s not enough time in the day. So for now I will keep it simple, but in a few years, I’m hoping that the sky’s the limit!

  1. I love Kim's work, her birds and flowers are gorgeous. Very inspirational that gets up early to paint, and that she can complete these amazing paintings in about an hour. Really enjoyed this post :)
