An Interview with Heather Freitas.

Where am I from?

I have lived primarily in the Midwest. I was born in Chicago and lived in rual Wisconsin and Minnesota growing up. Nature has always been important to me due to this experience and what I believe has impacted my work so much. When I was in Elementary school we moved to Arizona and upon middle school I was back in the Midwest. My fundamental years were spawned memories of fishing, wolves howling and the vastness of the forests. The animals in them and the mysteries they held. They were magical for me and somewhere I felt peace.

Upon graduating High School I moved back to Arizona to attend Arizona State Univeristys Herburger Fine Art college to obtain a bachelors in the arts and I have not left sense. Still every year I go back for a week in the summer to my small home town in Wisconsin and our family cabin away from modern society. It continues to fuel me and my work.

How did I get into this?

Ever sense I can remember I have been drawing. Upon entering High School my parents pushed me to take an art class, little could they image it would be my entire world thereafter. I have always loved challenges and after my first assignment my teacher assigned a charcoal project. She saw potential in me so as I watched her walk around the classroom handing each student a white piece of paper and a black piece of charcoal when she got to me things were not the same. She handed me a black piece of paper and white piece of charcoal and told me to draw in reverse. To push me even harder. I was hooked and from that moment I took as many art classes as I could and knew it to be my dream to one day be a full time artist.

I went on to college and took a wide array of art classes, from fibers and welding to painting and printmaking. All of these classes taught me something new and pushed to me the style of work that I do today along with my passion and love for the environment and my goal to help preserve what brought so much light into my life.

What is your driving force?

My voice that I love by is " It is said that one person can not change the world, but it is my deepest hopes that my artwork can". Throughout history art has not only documented the times but has also pushed movements. Art has no language barrier and it is my fuel that my work can bring about more awareness to the world about the pressing issues that surround us today. To preserve the beautiful and delicate world around us because without it, there is no us.

It seems as though it is all too common today for artists to just make pretty pictures. I am not sure when we lost what the masters have taught us and what made them so powerful. The fact that they documented the times. That they put what was then taboo in front of others eyes. It is important for me to carry this through. To continue to do what they did, because if they impacted history, so can I.

What kind of work do I do and why?

My work is primarily composed out of recycled materials and a mix of many different mediums and styles. While there is not yet a name for my style I do hope that one day there will. It is a combination of eco art, recycled art, pointillism, pop art, mixed media, abstract and Impressionism. It took over ten years of creating art to find this style that I believe is a direct reflection of myself. For years I strived for photorealism and I got very close, but one day I realized that was not what art was about for me. It was about the many layers and  techniques, each holding their own message within the greater message of the image itself. The art I create today is the direct reflection of this and why no matter how tough the roads can be that I still continue to push myself to work around the clock. To spread my message to all, without the barrier of language, much like our old masters.
